The described idea is not at all absurd; at the beginning of my Heroes journey, I only played like this with friends – in hotseat mode, without looking away from the screen during the other player's turn. The games were quite engaging. Moreover, they were shorter – if someone gained an insurmountable advantage, there was no need to waste time finishing them off.
