Well, this definitely sounds like you're advising someone to learn how to dive into a pool without water. Like, "Once you learn, then we'll fill the pool." I understand that it's unrealistic, but put yourself in his shoes (even though it's hard to imagine) - what would you do in his place - would you dive into a pool without water, or...?
