An online petition has begun to collect signatures to end the "New Greatness" case, in which 10 activists were arrested, including 17-year-old Anna Pavlikova and 18-year-old Maria Dubovik at the time. The petition appeared on the change.org website on August 30 and, at the time of writing, had collected more than two thousand signatures.
Journalist Vladimir Pozner, actress Lia Akhedzhakova, musician Andrei Makarevich, writer Lyudmila Ulitskaya, human rights activist Lev Ponomarev, editor-in-chief of "Novaya Gazeta" Sergei Kozherov, and many others have joined the appeal to "the leadership of the Russian Federation."
The authors of the petition demanded that the "New Greatness" case be closed. "The group, consisting of 13 people, was almost one-third made up of representatives of various law enforcement agencies, who, apparently, were competing with each other, creating and supporting this organization, the purpose of which was not the mythical 'overthrow of the constitutional order,' but the initiation of a criminal case," the appeal said.
The signatories drew attention to the fact that "New Greatness" is a politically motivated case, demonstrating the decay of state institutions. The organization was created by provocateurs, they wrote extremist documents and supported the organization when it began to fall apart," the authors said and demanded that those who made the trial of the organization's participants possible be brought to justice.
In March, the Dorogomilovsky Court sent activists of the "New Greatness" movement to jail. They were accused of organizing an extremist community. According to the case files, the leader and initiator of the movement was a person planted by the police. On August 16, it became known that two female defendants in the case were released under house arrest. The day before, on August 15, an unsanctioned "March of Mothers" was held in Moscow in protest against the imprisonment of the defendants in the "New Greatness" case in a pre-trial detention center. According to various estimates, from 200 to 1,500 people took part in it.
