Depressed patients systematically distort their perception of events, finding in them confirmation of their beliefs about their own worthlessness, negative views of the surrounding reality, and their future. Characteristic distortions of thinking may occur, such as drawing conclusions based on chance, "all-or-nothing" thinking, overgeneralization, selective abstraction, and exaggeration.
