I lost 2 horses trying to level up Serene with earth magic, but she leveled up Eagle Eye and Wisdom. Then I went to attack the elves with 3-group horses and a tent, and they killed a horse with inaccurate shooting and 2 morale. I surrendered. It's actually good that it happened that way; the roads and zones are a mess there.
