I'm adding my voice to the question.
I don't remember exactly how events unfolded, but here is what my memory suggests (I could be wrong).

It seems like 1.40 was made by Wizard for Game of Thrones -1 so that there would be rebuilding, but first, the patch proved a couple of months harder for Wizard than expected, and then it turned out that in SoD the patch works with glitches (I recall Dave seriously winning a game against someone by buying and using Gelu as intended, and in general, disabled heroes started appearing on mirrors in the tavern).
In HotA, 1.40 worked without such critical glitches, although, as far as I remember, rebuilding the guild crashed there too.
Meanwhile, Wizard prematurely left for RL, so there was no one to fix the bugs. And the temporary solution became what YaR wrote - in SoD Tournaments they played on 1.38, and in HotA Tournaments on 1.40.

Then Baratorch and the HotA team took matters into their own hands. And in HotA now, patches for the HD mod are disabled in principle; all functionality is baked into HotA and the mod (regarding the phrase "1.40 for HotA" - it's been gone for a long time). As for SoD, Baratorch made 1.38.2 - in which rebuilding works, but there are no critical bugs.
I assume that those who haven't looked into the situation play on 1.40. Perhaps by random coincidence (not :D ) these players don't like playing mirrors, so they couldn't step on the rake.
And they are unaware of the hidden surprises of 1.40.
