slavi-t, What difficulty level are you playing on? If it's on Recruit, try playing through it again as a Knight. Maybe Recruit mode has a bug. Phantoms are great for Magic Defense, along with the original unit. However, my Nicholas didn't seem to have Imps. Or if he did, it wasn't in large numbers. In any case, I didn't have any mana problems. Capture all enemy dwellings to prevent them from accumulating troops, even if you don't plan on buying anything there. When I played as a Knight, I bought a Necromancer in the tavern and built an army from all the Necropolises. He always stayed close to Faidaen, just in case. If a strong enemy appeared, he was supposed to be the first to engage in battle. However, that situation never arose. He only lent me about 200 gold a couple of times. Try not to prolong the game.
