2) An organization pursuing its own goals (and contracts are just a side benefit or a means to an end). Goals: power (creating a semi-legal network to increase influence), strength (getting stronger and becoming unparalleled fighters that others must respect), something more plot-driven (searching for a specific artifact or artifacts in general), maximizing fun, sowing chaos, or other options.
How could you not include the most banal, but no less effective, option of a nobleman who has lost his lands or a wannabe king? The other players could potentially be the potential retinue of the self-proclaimed ruler, his loyal followers. However, this could open up the possibility of abuse with the "Loyalty" persuasion skill, considering that loyalty here would be to another player's character. Besides, this somewhat limits the scope for writing the story.

I was trying to lobby for a knight squad in the chat.
Not a bad option, although it doesn't really fit into the character types I'm planning so far. Perhaps I could adapt the strategist to fit this. But I was leaning more towards a swordsman or a mage. However, the cards could change all of this.
