It feels like the writers were just like, "Let's have the protagonist fall in love with the main villain, that would be cool)))))000," and they're stubbornly pushing this idea.

I have a feeling that they've been competing since the first season to create the creepiest romance. Starting with Favarro, whose love of his life is a five-year-old girl (he even points this out himself), and ending with Nina, who ended up with this abusive, infantile guy (who reminds her of her father, lol).
