even despite the 0 to 115 wipe and the pope's exit at 131, I managed to expand in the center and claim all the necessary artifacts + thanks to the late exit, I found an elixir at respawn, which also added strength to the army, plus magic resistance. The god-level would have helped in the final battle if it had happened.
