the easiest thing is to hide from scouts on a peasant farm; they won't attack there. There are witches near the prophet's hut, from whom you can obtain the "Eagle Eye" skill (this is in the far right part of the map, slightly above the lower right ruins of the city). As for me, I chose boots as a starting bonus, leveled up Logistics + Path of War, and easily escaped from scouts. In general, I passed the first 3 missions relatively easily, but the 4th one was just awful; I played it for several days and barely managed to win.
