Yes, you definitely need to go to the Flax area. You can then use teleportation to get back to the oasis and speed up the process. I was somehow convinced that the Grail in the Flax area was just a red herring by the author.

However, I have some thoughts that it might be possible to complete the Flax area without the Grail.
