I didn't understand why Kile and GL, who took 2nd and 3rd place, had to play an extra game to determine 2nd place, when they could just play one game to determine the winner?

The places in group A have not been determined, so an extra game is needed, as the player who took 2nd place only needs to win one game in the playoff games, and the player who took 3rd place needs to win two games. In other words, it's the same as what you called a game to determine the winner... :D
