IMHO, the best party in M&M is a party of similar characters. Specifically in M&M8: if it's a melee party, then 3 trolls + Knight + dragon (moving by land is too slow, better to fly). If it's a party of mages, then 4 Necromancers and again a dragon (you could also take one dark elf instead of a Necromancer).
And a party like warrior, mage, thief/archer, cleric, dragon is a party that can do little in close combat (the cleric and Necromancer will go down quickly), while in ranged combat the warrior and cleric aren't particularly useful; in general, such a party can certainly do everything except fight effectively.
M&M isn't an MMORPG like LA2, where you need buffers, melee fighters, archers, and mages for serious clashes.
