After the brilliant Heroes of Might and Magic III and the masterpiece Might and Magic VII, it was Might and Magic VIII (along with Heroes of Might and Magic IV) that ruined 3DO. ))))

I won't claim that it was because of pirates with firearms, but it certainly played a role. ))))
