The lifestyle of the inhabitants of this region differs greatly from the societies of the lands north of the Mediterranean Sea. The women of this modest-sized country live separately from the men, in the city of Elian. The men live in the other four cities and smaller villages. Upon reaching adulthood, each man of this people comes to Elian, where he can choose any woman he likes as his wife. After that, they return together to his native settlement, where they live together. The daughters born to an Evan couple are given to be raised in Elian – by women who have returned to the city after the death of their husbands. The boys are raised in their own families.
The Evan people pay special attention to philosophy and certain fields of science, enjoy intellectual games, praise martial skill, and are exceptionally skilled with spears. Oracles are important figures in Evan society. Some Evan boys are blinded in early childhood, as it is believed in this country that the ugliness and beauty of the world cloud a person's mind, preventing them from making objective and well-considered decisions, which can have a detrimental effect on the fate of the entire people. These boys are trained according to a special program, and their supposed prophetic abilities are developed. Subsequently, the oracles serve as advisors to generals, governors, and ordinary people.
The Evan lands are often attacked by their neighbors, which is why the men of this country generally have extensive military experience. In peacetime, many of them participate in armed conflicts in other countries and are renowned as some of the most effective and professional mercenaries.
