I can't complete the 3rd mission, "Defense," as the Ranger. I'm not given the task to gather a garrison; what should I do? I'm repelling the attacks, but the task doesn't appear.

I had a similar problem there. The first Necromancer, who arrives after capturing the castle, didn't attack me. That is, the subsequent ones attacked the castle, but he just wandered around in the middle of the road, which prevented the script for one of the tasks from triggering. I had to replay the mission; then, I left the castle myself and attacked him, after which I immediately received the task.
