Come on, archers are fine. Try turning 1000 peasants into 1000 cavalry. You wouldn't have enough money in the world!:D

We'll be fine with archers; they hit hard with a volley attack, and they have more initiative than skeletons. Plus, the first strike is a significant advantage when dealing with thousands of units!
