I watched a number of streams and got the impression that players are trying to play like it's a regular Diamond-160% with long control. That is, buying as many heroes as possible in week 1, breaking through and collecting as many goodies as possible, etc.
Before the start of the tournament, I ran about 20-30 single-player generations of 2 weeks each to understand how it would feel for the players. I came up with roughly this development guideline — in week 1 we buy no more than 4-5 heroes (even if we have the gold), build the 6th dwelling in the Citadel and marketplace/well in the towns, don't poke at the computers too much, and avoid difficult fights either. By day 121 there are still 20+ minutes left, so we bring the number of heroes up to 8 and collect everything scouted in week 1. In other words, if a certain fight can be done in week 1 with great difficulty, but in week 2 with minimal time and troop losses, it's better to do it in week 2, because the tempo gained by an early breakthrough will later be paid back on the timer.
