Unfortunately, the opponent didn't reveal their "secrets." But during the game, an abstract build was revealed. They took Offense, Defense, Morale, Luck, and Light Magic. Interestingly, they had an artifact that gave +1 damage to each creature.
In general, I even managed to win in this game. But it wasn't due to great skill – the map was for three players. I managed to recover while they were losing their armies.
And then good artifacts appeared, Chaos Magic was upgraded to Expert, and Retribution became available. Only Preparedness was missing for complete happiness.
My attempts to analyze the mistakes led to the conclusion that I shouldn't have neglected Luck (although, at the expense of what? Offense? Education? Leadership? I hesitated to sacrifice any of them). I clearly wasted turns by converting Spear Masters into Zealots (I was reading the manual while playing and didn't yet know about the resistance to ranged attacks).
Perhaps, I shouldn't have killed the peasant who was running away with the Zealots; I could have used Tanths to attack him, damaging the Blood and Plate armor.
At first, it seemed that I was wrong to focus on archers so late, but again, the problem wasn't really with them. Obviously, the entire army was shattered against the peasants and Zealots (primarily the latter). How could I have countered them more effectively?
For example, if I had the opportunity to replay the battle, I would try to eliminate the archers and peasants as quickly as possible, preserving the bears. Then, taking advantage of the mana difference, I would bombard the swordsmen with my underdeveloped Chaos Magic, retreating with Tanths.
Does that sound reasonable? Are there any alternative, more rational suggestions?
