I agree with Fireball, a linear rating is definitely not objective.

No one is suggesting using a linear rating in its pure form. That goes without saying. It is just one component in calculating the rating, as it reflects the number of participants in the tournament... It is impossible to abandon this component, otherwise, in your example, second and third place would receive the same rating, which is also not entirely correct...

However, this component can be somehow distorted to avoid a linear dependence. Hence the question: what function is proposed as a criterion for distortion?
