Dreams.

I had a dream today that I ended up in some strange place that I couldn't leave. There were no visible obstacles to prevent this, but the fact that I couldn't leave remained. I wasn't alone there; there were other people, most of whom were clearly not entirely mentally stable, while others seemed fine, or at least pretended to be. It's unclear what the purpose of this place was; nothing special happened there, and life went on in a rather dull way, like a pale imitation of real life. In short, I spent ten years there. That's the dream I had.
