The most common reason for this is crop failure, which prevents farmers from paying off their debts to usurers and loans. As a result, families lose their main breadwinner, and the debts are passed on to wives and children. Meanwhile, in 2009, when low rainfall negatively affected the rice, sugar beet, and wheat harvests, 17,300 suicides were recorded, compared to only 1,400 in the prosperous year of 2010.
In total, 134,600 Indians voluntarily ended their lives last year. As the report indicates, most of them did so "due to problems at home and serious illnesses."
