It seems like nobody really likes Tigers.

Why should they be liked? They have no special skills – they’re just meat.
Now, about “melee units” – my main tactic is: losses~min, based on which, the losses of ranged units are always less than those of melee units. One type of melee unit goes in the front ranks for echeloned defense and no more. Primarily, these are Fairies, Phoenixes, Griffins, Pikemen, Harpies, and Vampires.
