The first time I played, there were around 380 dragons, and I only had about 50. How can I break through the garrison with such an army, and then defeat him?

You probably went to fight Faidaen too early, which is why it seems like the garrisons are too strong. When I fought Faidaen, his army was much larger. He had around 650 dragons.
