Bob couldn't be stronger; having all magic skills is actually a disadvantage for the hero! The hero dies almost in the first round, has no armor, and magic hits him hard. When I played through the campaign about him and his friends, I leveled them all up to level 40, with almost all skills, but I struggled with Bob every time, having to close him out, then resurrect him. No, it's better to have 3-4 magic skills plus tactics or combat.
Bob couldn't be weak if he had all his magic skills maxed out. My Arthur had around 800 HP (somewhere between 770-80). So, he definitely couldn't be defeated in the first round. And in general, it's hard to defeat him, considering that he also has an army, artifacts, his spells (both summoning spells and curses/blessings), and, if necessary, also the Book of Bod.
For me, it's a pleasure. And there's no need to protect him. But I repeat, this is the limit, the maximum.
