The native respawn is good, I was able to place bears thanks to the respawns from it. But then came the 10-19 block of crosses, which turned out to be 19. They killed all but 1 creature and 9 thieves (the birds were on the other side). There was nothing behind the block, so it turns out I didn't have to break through at 116. Then I broke through a few more blocks and finally broke out. In my joy, I attacked 20-49 diamond golems, but there were exactly 49 of them. I killed 45, but 4 finished me off.
