In connection with this, a stupid question - what system are you using? I've been using XP (I wrote everything for it) for 15 years, and there was only official SP-3, while SP-4 is just a build of all subsequent updates. I know that on later Windows systems there were problems installing "old" games.
Actually, Windows sometimes has glitches where it suddenly starts requiring something additional to install software, which it didn't require before and won't require afterwards.
