The Lamassu is the result of an unsuccessful experiment by mages to breed an improved breed of beastmen. Using magic, they attempted to combine a human (usually a criminal or a slave) and a magical creature (in this case, a manticore) into a single whole. The resulting creatures were unstable and short-lived, until one humble embalmer revealed their potential.
