The Fire Cannon is a wonderful illustration of the dwarves' ability to find practical applications for magic. From time to time, flaming dragons grant fire crystals to the clans. Dwarves install these crystals into cannons and use complex runic patterns to direct the power of the crystal and release an exploding fireball toward enemy fortifications.
