Isn't the check there more about accuracy than willpower? Either way, it's still better to slightly reduce the stats than to double or triple the costs.

1. Since the attack was unexpected and caused confusion, the rest of the map will only be revealed on the third turn. Cells around characters are also open, meaning one can run blindly.
2. The positioning of characters in the "camp"/on the path was organized randomly, as were the enemy attacks (humans assassins in their right mind would not have chosen a dead man with 2k hp as their target).
3. Since the battle takes place on rugged terrain suitable for a surprise attack, Randell' same partisan bonus is active.

Into the black space? Yes, you can throw AoE spells there, but it would be nice to accurately estimate where.
