I'll speak for myself regarding why I might be against legalizing weapons. Because weapons aren't given away for free. It would mean that I would have to buy one, even if I don't want to. Everyone who wants the illusion of security will have to buy one. And some won't be able to afford it. And even those who buy one might not be able to use it effectively when needed without proper training, including psychological training.
In the end, we'll have a small group of unscrupulous individuals (criminals) with legal weapons who know how to use them; a slightly larger number of honest people, also with weapons and capable of using them for their intended purpose – and a significantly larger group of people who either have no weapons at all or have weapons that will be useless in practice. I highly doubt that people in the last two groups will be better protected than they are now.

Also, regarding school shootings, I can ask, from what age is it proposed to allow people to carry weapons? If it's 18, for example, then 90% of people in school won't have weapons (yes, I've taken into account that teachers might have them) – so there won't be much difference from the current situation. Maybe 14 years old? Can you imagine modern teenagers, and what will happen if you give them each a gun?
