Celeborn is an Elven king of Lothlórien. Celeborn was a Sindarin prince of Doriath and a relative of King Thingol. In the First Age of the Sun, he betrothed himself to the Noldorin princess Galadriel, who bore him their only son, Celebrían. When Beleriand fell, Celeborn and Galadriel fled to Lindon, until in the 8th of the Second Age they settled in the Elven smiths' land of Eregion. During the War of the Ring, Celeborn led the defense of Lothlórien against three attempts to capture it, and then led an Elven army to Mirkwood, where he destroyed Sauron's fortress of Dol Guldur. When Galadriel left, Celeborn and his Silvan Elves left Lothlórien and founded East Lórien in Mirkwood on the site of the former Dark Woods. Celeborn ruled East Lórien for some time, but eventually he too retired to the West. It is believed that some time later he also departed for the Undying Lands.

During the Quest of the Ring, the hobbits were rescued and taken under the protection of Bombadil and Goldberry. Similar in beauty to an elven princess, Goldberry wore flowers in her hair and on her belt. She was dressed in silvery-golden garments and slippers that sparkled like fish scales. Her singing was thought to resemble that of a bird.

Frodo almost became a victim of Gollum's treachery and Shelob's ferocity; he would have fared badly if not for Sam Gamgee, who wounded Shelob and blinded her with the light of Galadriel's phial. According to some reports, Shelob died at the beginning of the Fourth Age — either from her wounds or from hunger, for she could not hunt blindly. However, there is no reliable information about her fate yet
