Chapter 2. The Price of Rage
Neira could not get out of her own house: the door and windows were locked, and the locks would not open even with a key. It was even stranger with the window - even throwing a chair at it couldn't break the glass.
Orton was attacked by bandits again. This time they showed up right at his house, and this "group" looked much more dangerous than the previous one. Among them, one two-meter tall brute stood out in particular: his fist was almost the same size as
Orton's head. The pawnbroker tried to put up some resistance, but the giant knocked him out with one blow.
First, the bandits brutally tortured
Orton, trying to extract information and money from him, and when they realized that he wouldn't say anything, they slit the pawnbroker's throat. May his steadfast spirit be kept safe by eternal fire!
Alexeagle did not survive the night either.
-Greetings, madam,- said an unfamiliar man standing on the doorstep, smiling,- forgive me for coming so late, but I really need to see the girl who rents a room from you.
-Ugh,- grumbled the old woman,- I see my little darling has become quite promiscuous! All sorts of guys come to her in the middle of the night.
-Not just any guys,- calmly corrected the stranger,- but very respectable and wealthy people.
A few coins flashed in front of the old woman, and she immediately smiled.
-Come in, come in, dear!- she stammered,- the girl is probably still awake! You won't disturb her at all.
He entered, smiled at the old woman again, but this time it was a cunning, evil smile, and abruptly, almost theatrically, raising his right hand, he paralyzed her with a spell. He naturally took the coins back. Then he went upstairs to the girl. She was already in bad shape: she was lying near the table, convulsing. Having confused the potions in a daze, she had apparently taken the wrong mixture. The stranger was not disturbed by the state of the victim; on the contrary, he laughed out loud.
-What a pitiful sight,- he said,- but never mind. I will help you.
A powerful electric charge passed through the girl's body, she jumped up and flew into the wall. The stranger smiled again.
-Now you won't interfere with me anymore. Goodbye, little girl.
The second charge was
Alexeagle's last.
-Why??- asked
GodenDag, bleeding,- why, old friend?
-You are no friend of mine!- replied the killer,- you are conspiring with those who stole the formulas from Caer-Morhen!
-You have already killed one good, albeit strange man, now you are killing another. What has become of you? What has become of the person I knew and respected, whose friendship I valued?! The one who single-handedly dared to stand against an enraged mob?! Do you remember Rivyia? Guided only by faith in goodness and justice, with my sigil in his hand, you alone stood up for the nonhumans!
-That doesn't matter anymore...
A sharp blow ended the gnome's life.
Only Dasha had a peaceful night - her life was under reliable protection.
With the dawn, Arandor inexplicably took a vow of silence.
