Don't be afraid and just start playing. You can use the HD mod – it helps a lot when you don't know the game mechanics well. You should also study FizMig and watch VODs (or streams) of good players, specifically on the template you plan to play on. This is very important. Watch Ichthyander's video on taking Necropolises. Practice taking Necropolises, Gnomish Strongholds, and other buildings.
I watched a couple of other saves where they hit ГО on Jebus Cross in the 2nd week. Heroes there are already level 15, 20 everywhere. I checked the respawn, all the crypts and dwarven mines are not taken, a lot of resources, even chests are lying untouched on the respawn.
