The lanterns in the streets and towers of Steimgard were lit, and the first patrols began their rounds. Only the most desperate thieves dared to leave their hiding places when the city guard was so determined. Behind the walls of the main cathedral, on the fourth level, in the meeting hall, the people were very tense and worried; the noise in the hall was interrupted by a stately man in a ceremonial cloak with gold patterns.
- We must do everything, I repeat, EVERYTHING to ensure that His Holiness reaches the capital safely and sound.
He continued, waving a revolver and urging maximum vigilance, while in the west of the city, the guard was preparing to close the last gates.
- What's going on there? - shouted the guard into the darkness, in the direction of the barracks.
There was no answer. Terribly tired and frozen, he wanted to close these accursed gates and leave the matter to the watchmen on the towers, but his friends seemed to be carried away by an exciting game and thought differently.
Two travelers in thick cloaks approached the gate from the field; it was impossible to see their faces through the hoods.
- Halt! Entry to the city is closed, order of the Governor!
The stranger who was behind stepped forward.
- We have a pass, signed by the king himself, - said a soft voice.
At that moment, steel flashed, and the guard fell to the wet pavement with a groan, blood gushing from his throat. Six shadows entered the city and disappeared into the shadows of the streets.
The cooled blood of the guard spread across the smooth stone of the road, and the moon and the tower with the city clock were reflected in it. Someone's cold tongue touched the viscous red puddle.
- Are you drinking the blood of these people?
The huge riding lizard tore itself away from the meal and grumbled discontentedly. The red-haired warrior dismounted and patted the lizard on the neck.
- Go, if everything works out, I'll be back soon, - she whispered.
The lizard slipped into a small ditch near the gate and disappeared from sight after a few minutes.
- Hey, stop! - someone suddenly shouted.
A squad of guards was ten meters from the gate, then moved towards it.
- Your place is on the gallows, beast!
A reddish sword flashed out of its scabbard, a monstrous roar sounded, and the blade blazed with fire. In two jumps, the half-breed covered the distance to the nearest guard and, with a light wave of the sword, cut off his head. The bloodless wound smoked as the head fell into the pool of blood left by the earlier guests. There was no point in chasing the guard; the half-breed moved deeper into the streets to the sound of the growing alarm bells.
The first night begins, I'm waiting for your actions.
