If you watch Pete's video (against KostyaN) playing as Conflux, you'll see that Galtran played one of the main roles there. The process of gathering skeletons is no different from starting as a Necromancer.

The Necropolis castle is one of the strongest, and also my favorite. I never relied on skeletons; I simply recruited them in large numbers. I also didn't rely on zombies or ghosts. These are just supporting units. The real strength of the Necropolis lies in liches, dark knights, and, of course, vampires. Their power, along with the hero's abilities, is what makes the Necropolis so formidable.

Someone should record gameplay as Necropolis =). Because there really isn't any gameplay footage of them. It's kind of strange. (Maybe it's due to some limitations?)

Try taking a Necromancer or a Wizard instead of a Galtaran, or a hero with a specialization in magic (Necromancy)...
Yes, skeletons aren't the main offensive force for Necropolis, but they are a quite powerful supporting force. I don't think there's much point in taking a Galtaran and increasing the stats of skeletons, especially at level 1...
To conquer a Stronghold on a small or medium-sized map, attack them before they build up their creatures, build only troops, and attack on the map as much as possible... A Wizard with vampires will be more fun in this case, as there will be quite a few battles with no losses.
