- Have you ever thought about power? About true power... Everyone has heard of you, but they are afraid to speak your name. Everyone knows of you, but they try to pretend that you are just a myth. You can destroy lives with a single thought, or you can grant that life. For you, there are no barriers; no one commands you. Power... real, true power...
These nightmarish dreams have long haunted a member of the academy, preventing him from sleeping peacefully. What causes this—ordinary nightmares, or the influence of a black mage? Right now, it doesn't matter to him, and he decides to get some fresh air to clear his mind. His dark silhouette moved along the empty street lit by lanterns, and his hair, much like a crumpled newspaper on the asphalt, obeyed the strong current of air blowing from somewhere in the north. "I need to distract myself from this magic," thought the night traveler, picking up the newspaper. Sitting on a green-painted bench illuminated by the dim light of a lamp, he began to read. The newspaper contained the usual boring news from the world of show business and politics, but one article especially caught his attention:
Wizardry causes public discontent - hundreds killed in black veil.Yesterday at noon, a video filmed by surveillance cameras from a local research center leaked onto the internet. Reminder: the center is located a couple of hundred kilometers from the city and was under reinforced guard. A couple of days ago, all personnel were found dead, and judging by the smell in the building, the mass murder occurred about three to four days ago. The video clearly shows how one room after another was filled with dark smoke. As experts established, all personnel simply suffocated. Authorities assure that an ordinary gas leak occurred, but many extremists insist on the closure of the academy of magic. Also, according to unverified data, it can be claimed that the center's archive was looted.Having finished his nightly wanderings, the young mage returned home, lay in bed, and then fell asleep.
A punitive squad led by Silverfail had been patrolling the city since yesterday in search of Vegtam, but to no avail. - "Well, what's the word?". In response, the mage only shook his head negatively at the captain. - "Damn!".
A couple of kilometers from here, Lizard was strolling, his face openly showing his excitement for the upcoming event...
Yesterday evening. After the meeting ended, Silverfail approached Lizard, ready to depart on the mission. Lizard shook his hand friendly and wished him luck in conducting the operation, to which he replied: "Lizard, you, Neyra, and Drakkosha are also signed up for this operation. As backup." The fire mage was stunned by such a statement and even asked if Silver was playing a joke on him. The guardian was as serious as ever.
- But why only the three of us? Why not take Arandor, Hostor, Nebo, the others?
- The Archmage is not confident in them. Until we connect, be ready—I will give the signal when we need you.
Silver left, leaving his friend alone with his thoughts and doubts.
Today. Lecture at the academy: the Archmage himself spoke about dark magic, its temptations, and consequences. - "By studying dark magic, a person is capable of achieving great success in magic, increasing their physical and intellectual abilities almost to the limit, but in return, they lose their mind, will, and reason. It turns out that the magic commands you, not you it. Dark magic burns inside you; it destroys your mind, kills you from within..." - one of the students asked if Magnus had encountered dark mages; the others supported him. - "Yes, of course. In general, there are quite a few of them—these are people who chose the easy path. For the most part, they are losers and weaklings. In our time, it is quite rare to encounter a true master of dark magic. If you are interested in whether I was personally acquainted with one of them, I will answer—yes: two years ago, a respected member of our academy and also my friend, a magister named Revan secretly studied the magic of Chaos and the magic of Destruction. Eventually, this was discovered... The consequences were horrific—Revan was killed, but in doing so, he took a large number of mages, police officers, and civilians with him".
The van continued to drive through the city as before. - "Captain, I suggest we return to the academy and have some coffee. Vegtam has probably already left the city".
- And I suggest simply following orders. We will be here until we are recalled.
The van driver only sighed and snapped back - "we are mages, not stupid soldiers... hey, what's that?". The howl of the wind was clearly heard near the car. Clouds thickened over the city; the wind intensified. The air current suddenly turned into a powerful tornado, at the epicenter of which the punishers' van ended up. The car slowly rose upward and then, following the direction of the air, was abruptly thrown outside the city—to the cemetery. Only a couple of minutes passed after the fall; Silverfail was the first and... only one who could get to his feet and leave the vehicle. As soon as he realized what had happened, he immediately sent a signal to the others on their GPS receivers.
All three, being in different parts of the city, began to carry out the order. Arandor stopped the running Lizard. - "Lizard, are you rushing somewhere?"
Kosha reached the destination first; having turned into a bird, it was easy for her to quickly cover the distance. An unpleasant sight met her eyes: Silverfail was fighting a huge crowd of undead, whom Vegtam directed like a puppeteer. Kosha immediately remembered Magnus's instructions: "there is no point in fighting an innumerable enemy—kill the one pulling the strings." Drakkosha took the form of a lion and bravely lunged at the necromancer...
"Damn it, I was going to help Silverfail! Are you happy now?". Arandor's face began to show bewilderment - "So you mean that instead of rushing to help, you are talking to me?" - Lizard fell silent. - "What are you standing there for? Let's go, hurry!"
By the time Lizard and Arandor reached the spot, Neyra Drake and Kosha lay unconscious at Vegtam's feet, while Silverfail was still fighting the dead. In the air, it seemed, the sound of helicopter blades echoed. "Scumbag!" - escaped Lizard's lips the moment he unleashed a powerful flame from his hands, which was extinguished without much trouble by a blast of air, and Lizard himself was thrown back ten meters. Arandor, meanwhile, entered close combat with Vegtam. The guardian's lack of weapons clearly affected the outcome of the fight—he too was defeated by the dark mage. But this battle gave Silverfail time—pushing through the dead, whose control had weakened during the fight, he made a sharp lunge toward the Necromancer and then delivered a series of combo strikes, finishing with an uppercut. When Vegtam fell, Silverfail continued to beat him without using any magical skills; he just hit... He hit without paying attention to what was happening around, while a cargo helicopter descended over the cemetery, from which a tall man in heavy plate armor disembarked. His proud face radiated confidence, and the two-handed hammer in his hands, through which lightning magic energy flowed, inspired fear. Approaching Silverfail, he made a powerful side swing with his weapon and hit the black-haired guardian straight on the head. For any other person, the head should have turned to mush, but Silverfail survived, although he lost consciousness. Then he approached the unconscious Vegtam, threw him over his shoulder, and carried him to the helicopter.
A few hours later, the survivors were in the academy's infirmary. All of them would soon return to normal, except for Silverfail, who, besides the lacerations inflicted by the dead, had a concussion and a skull fracture in several places.
The Archmage visited the victims, inquiring about what happened. Since they were knocked out during the final confrontation (except for Silver), they believed that Vegtam had overcome them, wondering—why did he leave them alive?
At night, while everyone was sleeping in the infirmary, it was filled with dark smoke. No one was hurt, but in the morning, Neyra Drake was missing...
