I
Beyond the Veil of Existence…
[/font]
A chime, echoing across hundreds of kilometers of void, rings from the top of a lone tower that was once a Temple, but is now desecrated: only the wind gathers those last souls whose refuge remains in this city… a city of the damned…. The gust of wind carries the souls striving toward the former monument of faith and justice. Having crossed the sole and extremely fragile bridge swaying over the abyss, which occasionally creaked treacherously, the doomed gathered on this islet: each bore their own sins, their own crimes. From afar, the fear and anxiety of
WhiteLizard were visible, contrasting with the grandeur and self-confidence of
Kash, who had managed to slip on the bridge without falling into the abyss.
Xostor lagged behind everyone, his aura flickering mysteriously: fragments of life-giving light covered him… The bell ceased its alarm… The wind surveyed those present; among them,
Drink and
Crabby were missing, as well as
Wedma and
Vegtam… The bridge swayed… in the distance, a black horse appeared: the rushing nightmare dissolved into the air…. A sign of loss… - spoke the oracle… - I warned you! Follow me! Forward!!! The time has come!!! The spirits rushed after the skeleton, within whose bones the spirit of the soothsayer lingered. In the sky—or rather, in what passed for it—those who followed saw a radiance: the sprawling light resembled a winding stairway of life that sliced the sky in half. The prophet merely spoke businesslike: I warned you! Another one is lost…. Now he is there! – the oracle meaningfully raised his bony finger upward… Soon the procession reached what served as
Vegtam's Asylum in this city of the damned: beneath their feet was charred sand, a blurred trace of a chain, and same ectoplasm… - Suddenly, the door swung open, revealing
Vegtam and shards of a broken mirror; things were scattered throughout the house, chains hung from the chandelier, the table was overturned – clearly, someone had made an absolute mess here… - I'm late…. – said the approaching
Wedma – her appearance was unremarkable: there were traces of stitches on her hands…. but no wounds… A breath of wind - the charred sand traced a name –
crabby – And I warned you! – the oracle spoke with indignation - all present remained silent as a sign of sympathy… The prophet clicked his teeth ominously, entering a trance: "Just look closer and see! I myself wanted what was best for people and would have done hundreds, thousands of good deeds instead of this one folly, not even folly, but simply an awkwardness, since the whole idea was not nearly as foolish as it now seems in failure... (In failure, everything seems foolish!) With this folly, I only wanted to place myself in an independent position, take the first step, acquire the means, and there everything would be smoothed over by immeasurable, comparative benefit... But I, I couldn't even withstand the first step, because I am a scoundrel! That is what it all comes down to! And still, I will not look through your eyes: if I had succeeded, I would have been crowned, but now—into a trap!" - after his speech, his body crumbled… Those present knocked on
Drnik's house; the door swung open in response, revealing a flooded floor: its base was scorched, the walls were also charred, and an uneaten, half-burnt cake floated on the table: there was grated chocolate and cocoa on top, the consistency suggested condensed milk, and at the peak of this work of art sat a real pearl pressing into a chocolate triangle; behind the pearl, chocolate was smeared in the shape of two trapezoids – the rest had been eaten. Soon, a wave covered the cake: streams of water rushed from the ceiling, washing away the only islet here - the table, covered in caustic slime – those present slipped out of the house, along with steam.
Hermit walked out last – he was haunted by a strange feeling: it seemed to him that he should have been in
Drnik's place….
