What do candles have to do with it? A Roman candle is a clue indicating the direction to dig. According to the description, "burning stars" are what these unknown entities scatter (or spray?).

I vote for NNV because I think Kyle fell into the Baker's trap (and there are probably clues about him when he kills), so I don't see the point in looking for the Baker unless you are the killers.
