And then a problem arose: during the game, either I or my friend would get disconnected. Most often, this happens when someone takes their turn. A message appears saying that one of the players has left the game (if that player was the server, another player becomes the server). The game doesn't end, it just replaces the friend with a computer AI. The most interesting thing is that, for my friend, the opposite happens – it says that I'm the one who left. This is a very strange issue. Does anyone know what this is related to? And how can we fix it? We just want to be able to play normally.

I had this problem with SOME players... I can play with some, but not with others.
It turned out to be a problem with my router - it has its own firewall.
The router was also distributing Wi-Fi internet.

The solution was to set my internal IP in the router's DMZ (Demilitarized Zone).

I started searching through all possible instructions and forum topics, but I didn't find anything there. The instructions on this forum are only suitable for complete beginners, and they were actually taken from the FIFA website. I had to search the internet and ask a programmer friend for help. After much effort and a few beers, human reason finally triumphed over the stupid piece of hardware with silicon brains. =)
Therefore, in this topic, I will try to describe the complete Hamachi setup for normal online play. (all settings are for winXP sp2)
I hope it will be useful to someone and help them. WARNING! ALL SETTINGS DESCRIBED HERE, YOU USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

All errors related to playing online through Hamachi can be conditionally divided into three groups:
1. Errors during installation/launch of Hamachi
2. Errors when connecting two clients in the same network
3. Errors related to online play

Errors from groups 1 and 2 can be eliminated in three ways:
Method #1. The easiest. Download the WinsockxpFix program, run it, click the 'Fix' button, and restart. This program restores all default Windows network settings. In most cases, it can fix more than half of the errors and problems when connecting.
Method #2. More difficult. You will need a Windows XP disc. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Install and Remove Programs -> Add or Remove Windows Components. Uncheck (if they are present) and re-check the boxes next to: Network Services, Management Tools. Then click OK, and you will be asked to insert the Windows XP installation disc. This is what we need. Wait for the installation to finish, clicking OK if necessary, and restart.
Method #3. The most tedious. Manual configuration, if the first two methods do not help. Read about manual configuration below.
Method #4. The most radical. Format C: =) Install the system from scratch, install Hamachi, install Heroes 3, and play. This solves all problems, but you understand...

Errors from group 3 are not related to this topic because they arise due to version mismatches, poor connection, power surges, magnetic storms, etc. Here, you can only advise having completely identical versions of the games (for example, downloaded from the same torrent, or downloaded from each other) and a good connection.

So, manual configuration or method #3

1. Errors during installation/launch of Hamachi
Errors in this group are usually related to the incorrect configuration of the Hamachi network adapter due to the absence or disabling of the necessary network services in your system.
1.1. "Failed to connect to the Hamachi network adapter"
= If, after installation, when you first launch Hamachi, you get this error, it means that the virtual Hamachi network adapter is disabled or incorrectly configured. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections, and look for a connection named Hamachi in the "LAN or High-Speed Internet" group. If it is disabled, right-click on it -> enable. Restart Hamachi.
1.2. "Failed to configure the Hamachi network adapter. This problem is most likely due to your firewall blocking DHCP traffic on the Hamachi adapter"
Sometimes, when enabling the Hamachi adapter (item 1.1), you will see the following: an icon with two computers and a spinning dot appears in the system tray. This means that the virtual IP address is being configured. After a while, this icon disappears, which indicates that the address has been successfully assigned. However, sometimes this icon remains lit constantly, and when you try to launch Hamachi, you get this error. There may be several reasons, one of which is that the IP address is not assigned automatically. To begin, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections, right-click on the Hamachi connection -> Properties -> General. In the list of components, find 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)', select it, click Properties, and make sure that 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' are selected on the main tab, and 'Automatic private IP address' is selected on the Alternative Configuration tab. Now, on the main tab, click 'Advanced' -> WINS tab. Check 'Enable LMHOSTS lookup', set NetBIOS parameters to default (if this item is not available, see below), TCP/IP tab. Select 'TCP/IP Filtering', click 'Properties', check 'Enable TCP/IP filtering', and check 'Allow all' below. Click OK several times.
Restart, try to launch Hamachi. If the error repeats, it is possible that the necessary services are not working. To check, go to: Start -> Run -> services.msc. The 'Services' window will open. Find two services there: 'DNS Client' and 'DHCP Client'. Check their status; both should be 'Running'. If not, right-click on the service and click 'Start'. If both services start successfully and are running, repeat all the steps above, restart, and launch Hamachi. IF you get an error when trying to start the service (I don't remember the code, unfortunately :( ) "Failed to start a child service", then it is likely that the TCP/IP protocol driver is disabled. To enable it, go to Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager. Then, View -> Show hidden devices, select 'Non Plug and Play Drivers', find 'TCP/IP Protocol Driver' and 'NetBIOS over TCP/IP'. Both should be working (if there is a red cross icon on one of them, it means the device is disabled, enable it by right-clicking -> Properties, at the bottom, 'Device Usage', select 'This device is used (enabled)'. After that, set the 'DNS Client' and 'DHCP Client' services to 'Automatic' startup type in their properties and restart. Try to launch Hamachi.

2. Errors when connecting two clients in the same HAMACHI network
Hamachi is installed, it launches, and even connects to the network. It seems that everything is normal, but when connecting to the network, there is no ping (either on one or both).
2.1. First, make sure that you do not have any firewalls, antivirus programs, etc. running. Do not forget that they may be running in the background. Go to Start -> Run, type msconfig, and open the System Configuration window. Go to the Startup tab and uncheck firewalls, antivirus programs, etc. For example, for Kaspersky antivirus, there will be items avp and avpcc, for the Outpost firewall, there will be an item outpost, etc.
2.2. Secondly, disable the standard Windows XP firewall (which appears in SP2). Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Security Center, click Windows Firewall, select 'Turn off (not recommended)' on the General tab. Then, go to the Advanced tab. There, you will see a list of network connections. Uncheck all boxes, click the Parameters button. A window with additional parameters will open. Select the ICMP tab and check the 4 top items 'Allow incoming echo requests', click OK. Advanced tab, find the inscription 'ICMP Protocol', find and click the button on the right, and do the same, select the ICMP tab and check the 4 top items 'Allow incoming echo requests', click OK.
Set the priority of the Hamachi network adapter. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections, in the top menu, find Advanced -> Advanced Settings. On the Adapters and Bindings tab, move the Hamachi connection to the top (select it and click the 'Up' arrow).
After all this, RESTART.
Try to connect to the Hamachi network, ping each other. If the ping goes from both sides, launch Heroes and try to connect.

It is possible that everything written here may lead to the fact that your entire system will be ruined, or you will lose your internet connection, or maybe everything will end successfully, and you will finally be able to play Heroes online. Use these settings carefully!

You probably don't know what Hamachi is and what the difference is between it and GameSpy.
GameSpy mainly performs chat and player search functions.
Only players with direct IPs can create games and play in it.
But Hamachi allows any players to play, including those with indirect IPs, and there are many of them in your Soviet Union.

GameRanger allows you to create games even if you have a dynamic IP address.
