Man, I'm currently playing on Hell difficulty in Act 3 as a Barbarian... I've been using two two-handed swords that I got back in the first difficulty, looted from Diablo and Baal. I haven't found anything better yet. As for armor, that's a different story. But overall, if you max out the second attack skill and weapon mastery, my Barbarian becomes quite formidable... :) I usually put sapphires in my weapons, but no more than one. And something really good, in terms of gear, drops for me very rarely... :(

And the third, he's only on normal difficulty for now – a wizard. He casts spells, but not very effectively... but he can survive.

Check the attack speed in werewolf form, not in bear form, and you'll understand where it's INSANE. I don't like summoners in Diablo, so no comments here. And you're wrong about the sorceress. By the way, these characters were simply not removed in time before the release. In Hellfire, there were supposed to be 7 characters (in the original, there were 4, + the Blood Mage, who didn't make it into the release).

Believe me about the Barbarian in the first Diablo; whether you're playing a pirated or legitimate copy doesn't matter. I think Barbarians also have problems with magic... zero, really. As for Druids... I've leveled up all sorts of Druids; I know them inside and out, like the back of my hand... or maybe like a bear? Never mind. So, attack speed is definitely a plus for the Werewolf, and there's also the speed bonus from Feral form, plus Fury is unmatched. I don't remember if you can give Fury to a bear... But the attack speed of the Werewolf becomes negligible at level 5-6, so I don't see the point in leveling up skills beyond those levels. I also leveled up a Summoner. It's not as good as a Necromancer with his hordes of skeletons in terms of quality (and quantity), but you don't need a Corpse Explosion spell. But still, there's only one Grizzly... And the first two spirit summons are surprisingly good. I also leveled up a caster-Druid. Tornado is decent, but it has problems with range and targeting. The chance to hit is only high at close range. And fire... let's not talk about how good it is; it's great. Not all spells are created equal. But... hmm... in general, the spell that opens rifts in the ground is exotic, but it does incredible damage. It's a shame it's not very effective in corridors.
