At level 4, I like Vampires, Riders, and... Griffins. It's a very good unit; the first upgrade has high initiative and a strike from above (no need to comment), and the second one turned out to be not as bad as I initially thought. Indeed, attacking a Griffin that is defending is very scary, and if it has Readiness? It's just terrible.

I like demonesses – they can fire in a chain, and respond to attacks with another chain of shots. Vampires (vampire lords) are also cool – they don’t get attacked, and they just keep going! And, of course, lizard riders – they have real combat power. I also have a lot of respect for druids and wizards, but overall, I think that level 4 warriors are the backbone of all armies.

Yes... vampires, succubi, and I would add druids with mounted units to that list. And I agree with 2DDarkKnight.

Archmages are awesome!!! On small maps, their fireball is really helpful!!! And with the introduction of combat... Now you can at least protect them; they don't attack your own units anymore;)!!!

Well, archmages certainly can't boast about their damage or other stats. Fireball or any other equivalent spell will be much more effective when cast by a hero, and there are no mana problems.

The key units at level 4 are the new druids, who can significantly increase the hero's spellcasting ability, and, to some extent, the dark rider, who ignores defense when charging and biting. The rest are just a nice addition...
