Recently, a topic about elves, the love for them, and everything related was raised on the forum. And, essentially, I became curious about how many of us have a fondness for or dislike of this pointy-eared race, and why they feel that way about elves. Yes, the topic may have already been discussed, but I'm too lazy to search for discussions about elves, and this is a general discussion forum, so I'll risk creating this topic.

Personally, I like elves, but I don't like how they are portrayed in most worlds. I don't like these androgynous friends of the forest; I don't like that type. And why do I like these elves? Well, I can only say that it's because of their pointed ears, eternal (or quite long) youth, and possibly their inclination towards magic.

I'm the first! And what kind of elves are we talking about?

well, in WoW, I like the Blood Elves' magic resistance; in Heroes, I like the Elven Archers for their powerful attack.

This is about the image of elves, not their in-game advantages. Actually, it should be, but it isn't =(

I was pleased with how elves were portrayed as outcasts in Dragon Age. Otherwise, it's just one cliché after another.
But overall, as a concept, elves don't disgust me.

Which one, and in what way?

A long-lived people renowned for their unparalleled skill, but on the verge of extinction. I think it's this one.

Just like the Human template and most other factions, generally speaking. And what's so bad about such a template? Is originality really that important? But if so, then why have Elves? Why not come up with a completely different faction?

It's a complex question, actually. Each universe has its own unique elves, some more relatable to individuals, others less so. Even within the works of a single author, elves can differ significantly (in my opinion, they are very different in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion – due to the fact that these are different books written at different times). For example, I like the elves in Sapkowski's works.

I don't like Sapkowski's elves in The Witcher; they're almost as bad as humans, or nearly the same. And I also don't like it when they're made into overpowered beings, like they're the most elite race, the wisest, the most philosophical, the most unsurpassed archers, the most beautiful, and so on. But I also don't like it when they're humiliated and made into some worthless garbage. And in general, the cutest elves are the small and winged ones.
