Ahmed Ibn Fadlan, a court poet, was exiled from the caliph's court on suspicion of adultery and sent as an ambassador to the north. The caravan with which Ahmed travels is attacked by Tatars, and after a chase, they find themselves cornered by a river. Unexpectedly, a Viking ship appears, saving everyone from certain death. Ahmed and Melchizedek join the Viking ship led by King Bulwaif, who receives news of the need to help one of the northern kings. During a divination session, it is revealed that 12 Vikings and one foreigner must come to their aid, and Ahmed becomes that foreigner. Not knowing the language, he sails north with a company of fierce Vikings to liberate the lands from the attacks of bear-men and to go from an effeminate man to a true warrior.
O God of Earth and Altar, Bow down and hear our cry, Our earthly rulers falter, Our people drift and die, The walls of gold entomb us, The swords of scorn divide, Take not thy thunder from us, Take away our pride.
