I don't remember the exact number of level 1 units, but I've highlighted the 12 main ones.

Centaur is a versatile unit with the best HP for its level.
Wolf has 2 attacks and is excellent in melee combat.
Arbalester shoots without any penalties.

But I didn't vote for the Berserker – its lack of control makes it useless :p.
The Dwarf is strong but slow.
The Orc is versatile, but clearly weaker than the Centaur.
The Hobbit's low health and attack stat let it down.

In general, as with the situation with castles, some parameters are compensated by others, or by the number of units. It's all about balance.

Halfling and wolf (or a fairy, that's also good, as it's a non-retaliatory unit). Halfling because it deals more damage at level 4, and it's a ranged unit in general. And the wolf has two attacks. When you have a lot of them, it's a powerful force!

Well, the Berserker is useless. He wastes his resources. The Barbarian is always left without decent level 1 creatures.
