Heroes is a turn-based game, so there's no need to rush.

All heroes and castles are good in their own way. It’s best to develop creature dwellings gradually, level by level; this helped me a lot. You should immediately capture the lumber mill and mine, and also, ideally, build a building that generates income within the first week (prefecture/magistrate/capitol, depending on the map; by the way, there might be a different translation, so I’ll just say that this building is located in the lower left corner of the town, and you build and upgrade it through the same interface in the upper left corner).
