Psychological defense mechanism:

Intellectualization. This defense mechanism is often referred to as "rationalization." The authors of the methodology have combined these two concepts, although their essential meaning is somewhat different. For example, the action of intellectualization manifests itself in an excessively "intellectual" way of overcoming a conflicting or frustrating situation without experiencing emotions, based on facts. In other words, a person suppresses the feelings caused by an unpleasant or subjectively unacceptable situation with the help of logical attitudes and manipulations, even if there is convincing evidence to the contrary. According to F.E. Vasilyuk, the difference between intellectualization and rationalization is that it essentially represents a "departure from the world of impulses and affects into the world of words and abstractions."

In rationalization, a person creates logical (pseudo-reasonable) but plausible justifications for their own or someone else's behavior, actions, or feelings caused by reasons that they (the person) cannot acknowledge due to the threat of losing self-respect. In this defense mechanism, obvious attempts are often observed to reduce the value of experiences that are inaccessible to the person. For example, when in a conflict situation, a person protects themselves from its negative effects by reducing the significance for themselves and others of the reasons that caused this conflict or psychologically traumatic situation. Sublimation was also included in the intellectualization-rationalization scale as a psychological defense mechanism, in which repressed desires and feelings are hyperbolically compensated by others that correspond to higher social values professed by the person.

Psychological defense mechanism:

Projection. Projection is based on a process whereby unconscious and unacceptable feelings and thoughts are localized outside and attributed to other people, thus becoming secondary. The negative, socially disapproved shade of experienced feelings and traits, for example, aggression, is often attributed to those around, in order to justify one's own aggression or ill will, which manifests as if for defensive purposes. Well-known examples include hypocrisy, when a person constantly attributes their own immoral aspirations to others.

Less often, another type of projection is found, in which significant people (usually from the microsocial environment) are attributed positive, socially approved feelings, thoughts, or actions that are capable of elevating. For example, a teacher who has not shown particular abilities in professional activity is inclined to endow a favorite student with talent in this area, unconsciously elevating himself in the process ("the winner student receives from the defeated teacher").

Psychological defense mechanism:

Denial. A psychological defense mechanism through which a person either denies certain frustrating, anxiety-provoking circumstances or some internal impulse or aspect denies itself. As a rule, the effect of this mechanism manifests in the denial of those aspects of external reality that, although obvious to others, are nevertheless not accepted or acknowledged by the person themselves. In other words, information that is disturbing and could lead to conflict is not perceived. This refers to a conflict that arises when motives that contradict a person's core beliefs are manifested, or information that threatens their self-preservation, self-esteem, or social prestige.

As a process directed outward, denial is often contrasted with displacement as a psychological defense against internal, instinctive demands and impulses. Notably, the authors of the IJS methodology explain the presence of increased suggestibility and trust in histrionic personalities by the action of the denial mechanism, with which undesirable, internally unacceptable traits, properties, or negative feelings towards the subject of experience are denied in the social environment. As experience shows, denial as a psychological defense mechanism is realized in conflicts of any kind and is characterized by a clearly distorted perception of reality.

Psychological defense mechanism:

Displacement. Z. Freud considered this mechanism (its analogue is suppression) to be the main way to protect the infantile "ego," which is unable to resist temptation. In other words, displacement is a defense mechanism through which unacceptable impulses for the personality – desires, thoughts, feelings that cause anxiety – become unconscious. According to most researchers, this mechanism underlies the action of other defensive mechanisms of the personality. Displaced (suppressed) impulses, not finding resolution in behavior, nevertheless retain their emotional and psychovegetative components. For example, it is typical for the content side of a psychologically traumatic situation not to be realized, and a person displaces the very fact of some reprehensible act, but the intrapsychic conflict remains, and the emotional tension caused by it is subjectively perceived as externally unmotivated anxiety. This is why displaced drives can manifest in neurotic and psychophysiological symptoms. As research and clinical experience show, many properties, personality traits, and actions that do not make a person attractive in their own eyes and in the eyes of others are most often displaced, for example, envy, ill will, ingratitude, etc. It should be emphasized that psychologically traumatic circumstances or unwanted information are actually displaced from a person's consciousness, although externally this may look like active resistance to memories and self-analysis.
