When the shamans decided that without a generous sacrifice the gods would not grant their tribe a new spring, the lot fell on Kriv. Chained to the rune-stone, he awaited death, and it came to him in the guise of a white owl: it took only one of his eyes, granting in exchange the gift of seeing through time. Returning blind but alive, he foretold exactly the coming of warmth and rightfully became first among the shamans.
